Florida Traffic Ticket Update: November 7, 2026

New school-zone cameras in Boca Raton, who pays a camera ticket in a rental or borrowed car, and red-light camera deadlines

Part 1: What’s New

Boca Raton Turns On School-Zone Speed Cameras at Three More Schools

Starting November 9, Boca Raton is adding speed cameras near Calusa Elementary, Blue Lake Elementary, and Omni Middle/Spanish River High. That brings the city’s Palm Beach County program to six school zones. Boca’s cameras only record while the school-zone lights are flashing. Each new zone starts with a 30-day warning period. After that, the city says drivers going 11 mph or more over the limit will get a $100 civil citation with no points and no insurance impact.

What this means for you: If you drive Clint Moore Road, Military Trail, or Jog and Yamato during school drop-off or pickup, slow down when the beacons flash. If a notice arrives, read the deadlines carefully.

Part 2: Driver’s Guide

I Got a Red-Light Camera Ticket in a Rental or Borrowed Car — Who Has to Pay?

A Florida red-light camera notice goes to the vehicle’s registered owner. For a rental car, that is the rental company. For a borrowed car, it is your friend or family member.

The owner doesn’t have to pay for someone else’s driving. Florida law lets the owner send in an affidavit saying the car was in another person’s care, custody, or control. For a rental, the affidavit gives the renter’s name, address, date of birth, and, if known, driver’s license number. The person named then gets their own notice within 30 days and can pay, request a hearing, or contest it (Fla. Stat. s. 316.0083(1)(d)). Knowingly filing a false affidavit is a second-degree misdemeanor.

If you were the driver in a rental, check your rental agreement as well, since many companies add their own processing charges. If you lent your car to someone in Miami-Dade, Broward, or Palm Beach, don’t ignore the notice. Use the affidavit option before the deadline so the camera ticket follows the actual driver.

What this means for you: Holiday visitors and anyone who borrows a car should watch the mail for weeks after a trip. Camera notices and citations have firm deadlines.

Part 3: Common Questions

Does a red-light camera ticket put points on my Florida license or raise my insurance?

No. A camera-enforced red-light violation carries no points and can’t be used to set insurance rates. A red-light ticket written by an officer at the scene is different: it carries 4 points.

How long do I have to respond to a red-light camera notice?

You have 60 days from the notice to do one of three things: pay the $158 penalty, request a hearing, or submit an affidavit. If you do nothing, a Uniform Traffic Citation is mailed to you by certified mail, and the case moves into the court system with added costs.

Can I reschedule or cancel a red-light camera hearing?

Yes, within limits:

  • Reschedule: You can reschedule once by asking in writing at least 5 calendar days before the hearing.
  • Cancel: You can cancel by paying the penalty plus $50 in administrative costs before the hearing starts.
  • If you lose: The hearing officer can add up to $250 in costs.
  • Appeal: An appeal goes to circuit court within 30 days.

How common are red-light camera tickets in Florida?

Very common. Florida’s highway safety department reported more than 1 million red-light camera notices statewide in fiscal year 2023–24. Only a few thousand were contested at a hearing, and nearly 300,000 unpaid notices turned into traffic citations. Many South Florida cities, including Aventura, Miami Gardens, Boynton Beach, Sunrise, and North Miami Beach, run camera programs.
