How long Florida points really last, how they’re counted, and how to keep them off your record
Driver’s Guide: Do Points Ever Come Off My Florida Driving Record?
Many Florida drivers assume points “fall off” after a few years. According to the Hillsborough County Clerk of Court, points on a Florida license do not expire and can’t be removed once the state assesses them. What changes over time is whether those points still count toward a suspension. Under section 322.27(3) of the Florida Statutes, a suspension depends on how many points you collect within a set window: 12 points in 12 months, 18 points in 18 months, or 24 points in 36 months. Under section 322.27(4), the state uses the offense date of each conviction when it adds them up.
How long a ticket shows up depends on which record someone looks at. FLHSMV offers 3-year, 7-year and complete driving records. The 3-year and 7-year versions list guilty dispositions only within that window. The complete record shows everything, including tickets where adjudication was withheld.
What this means for you: A ticket in Miami-Dade, Broward or Palm Beach can stay on your record long after it stops counting toward a suspension. The best protection is keeping points off your record in the first place.

Common Questions
How many points is a speeding ticket in Florida?
Speeding 15 mph or less over the limit is 3 points. More than 15 mph over is 4 points. If speeding causes a crash, it’s 6 points (s. 322.27(3)(d)).

Can traffic school keep points off my license?
Often, yes. For an eligible civil infraction, a driver without a commercial license can elect a basic driver improvement course. If you do, adjudication is withheld, no points are assessed, and the civil penalty is reduced by 18%. You can elect traffic school only once in any 12-month period, and no more than eight times in your lifetime (s. 318.14(9)).

How can I see what’s on my Florida driving record?
FLHSMV sells 3-year, 7-year and complete driving records. You can buy one through the MyDMV Portal, at a driver license service center or participating clerk’s office, or by mail using the state’s request form.

Does a ticket after a crash carry more points?
Yes. Speeding or using a phone illegally that causes a crash is 6 points. Most other moving violations that cause a crash are 4 points, compared with 3 points without a crash (s. 322.27(3)(d)).
