Florida Traffic Ticket Update: October 19, 2026

Card Sound Road toll increase, a new school-zone camera report, and what out-of-state drivers should know about Florida tickets

Part 1: What’s New

Card Sound Road Toll Went Up on October 1

Driving from Miami-Dade to Key Largo on Card Sound Road now costs a little more. Monroe County raised the toll on October 1 based on inflation. A two-axle vehicle now pays $2.18 with SunPass or $3.28 with Toll-By-Plate. The toll is fully electronic, so drivers without a transponder are billed by mail.

What this means for you: Pay mailed toll bills promptly. Under Florida law, an unpaid toll can turn into a toll violation citation.

Another City Reports Its School-Zone Camera Numbers

Winter Garden reported 6,942 school-zone speed camera notices for July 2025 through June 2026. It’s another example of how many camera tickets Florida cities issue each year. Cities that run these programs must report their results every year, so similar numbers should be coming from programs in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

What this means for you: A school-zone camera ticket has its own deadlines and options. Read the notice carefully and respond on time.

Part 2: Driver’s Guide

I Got a Florida Traffic Ticket With an Out-of-State License. What Happens?

Every fall, seasonal residents and visitors get speeding tickets and other traffic tickets in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach. Florida belongs to the Driver License Compact, so when you’re convicted of a traffic offense here, Florida reports it to your home state (Fla. Stat. 322.44). The Miami-Dade Clerk also confirms that Florida reports Miami-Dade tickets to other states (Miami-Dade Clerk FAQ). For most ordinary tickets, your home state decides the effect, including any points, under its own laws. The most serious offenses, like DUI, are treated as if they happened at home.

Ignoring the ticket is a bad idea. Under the Nonresident Violator Compact, if you don’t comply with a Florida citation, Florida can report that to your home state. Your home state can then start a suspension that lasts until you show you’ve taken care of the ticket (Fla. Stat. 322.50).

Florida’s basic driver improvement (traffic school) option in Fla. Stat. 318.14(9) isn’t limited to Florida license holders, though commercial license holders and some violations are excluded. When you elect it, adjudication is withheld and the fine is reduced by 18 percent. How your home state treats that result depends on its own rules.

What this means for you: An out-of-state license doesn’t make a Florida ticket go away. Deal with it within the deadline, before it follows you home.

Part 3: Common Questions

Do I have to pay on the spot if I’m from out of state?

Generally, no. For drivers licensed in a member state, the Nonresident Violator Compact lets the officer accept your promise to handle the citation, so you can keep going without posting money. Parking, weight-limit and hazardous-materials violations aren’t covered. Source: https://flsenate.gov/Laws/Statutes/2026/322.50

I have a Florida license and got a ticket in another state. Will I get Florida points?

If the offense would earn points in Florida, Florida generally assigns its own point value, as if the ticket were issued here. One clerk’s office also notes that Florida drivers can’t use Florida traffic school for an out-of-state ticket. Source: https://okaloosaclerk.helpjuice.com/points-from-out-of-state-tickets

I spend the winter in Florida. When do I need a Florida driver license?

Once you become a Florida resident, you have 30 days to get a Florida license. FLHSMV says residency can include taking a job here, enrolling children in public school, registering to vote, filing for homestead, or living here more than six consecutive months. Vehicles must be titled and registered within 10 days. Sources: https://flhsmv.gov/new-resident | https://flsenate.gov/Laws/Statutes/2026/322.031

How many times can I take traffic school in Florida?

Florida law now allows up to eight elections in a lifetime, with no more than one in any 12-month period. Some local web pages still list the old limit of five. Source: https://flsenate.gov/Laws/Statutes/2026/318.14
